Headline Flip turns the poster upside down. Can it turn the audience too?

On 5 November 2026, Headline Flip returns to Pumpehuset. An established Danish artist plays first, and then Masiv, Ayla and Inga Bari take over the stage. Roskilde Festival, which is behind the event, is still keeping the opening name secret. The other three names, by contrast, are no secret at all, and they ought to be the ones we are talking about.

The idea is a clever little intervention in the social hierarchy of a concert. The support act can easily become a polite waiting room while the bar hums, friends look for one another, and attention slowly settles on the artist whose name is printed in the biggest letters. Headline Flip tries to use the familiar artist as a door-opener rather than a destination.

That is appealing, because the format does not pretend that fame is irrelevant. It takes its power seriously and tries to use it differently. This comment is about that idea. Whether the evening also works musically will have to wait until it has actually happened.

The star is still a magnet

At the same time, the secret is the format’s hardest contradiction. The established artist is both tool and lure. I fear the anticipation will gather around the empty space on the poster, while the three main names are reduced to clues in a guessing game. Who could the star be? How big a name have they managed to land?

So the order has been turned upside down, but not necessarily the attention. The audience may still come for one artist and regard the rest as something they can politely leave behind.

Three names that are not just waiting to be discovered

Fortunately, the electronic programme has more to offer than a clue. In Roskilde Festival’s presentation, Masiv stands for the meeting between electronic production and live drums, while the Aarhus-based producer trio Inga Bari works with a machine-based live setup and improvisation. Ayla is a Malmö-based singer and producer with four albums behind her and a sound that connects dub, reggae and electronica.

These are different starting points, not three versions of the same debut act. Ayla in particular makes it worth pausing over the word talent. Four albums are not an application to be allowed to begin. You can easily be a new discovery for a Danish audience and still have a whole artistic working life behind you.

Talent is a strange word anyway. It sounds like praise, but it also parks people in a waiting room: They are promising. They are on their way. They may become something. What if we treated the music they are already making as the real reason to show up?

That is where Headline Flip offers more than a clever name. A headliner does not just get a later slot. It comes with the expectation that its concert is the one worth staying for. That expectation can be shifted, even if no promoter can decide what the audience should love.

The coat check becomes the real test

Headline Flip is part of Roskilde Festival’s year-round Rising initiative. Pumpehuset will also receive a special visual installation by visual artist Jasmin Aiche Mahallati. I like the ambition to give the evening its own frame. The three names do not need to look like guests in the finished show of a bigger artist.

The strongest argument for the mystery is, of course, that some people would otherwise never have been curious. The familiar artist can work as a recommendation in live form. You can come for one name and go home with three new ones. There is no reason to demand that the audience’s motivation be morally pure at the door.

But the decisive movement comes afterwards. If guests drift toward the coat check as soon as the opening act has finished, the format has merely moved the usual headliner earlier in the evening. If they stay and give Masiv, Ayla and Inga Bari their attention, then something more interesting has happened than a graphic exercise with a poster.

It is also a reminder that the audience has a role in the musical scenes we say we want. We cannot keep asking for surprises and only show up for what we already know.

On 5 November, then, the test is not whether the audience can recognise a star. It is whether they can stay once that star has left the stage.
