Aarhus hummed with musical curiosity as SPOT Festival 2025 opened with a day that embraced everything from tender pop to experimental jazz and raw metal. The audience was met with a wide spread of new names, and if one thing was clear, it was this: the Danish music scene is not standing still — it’s bubbling over.

The day got off to a solid start in Den Rå Hal, where Mad Magpie and Absurd delivered energetic openings. The afternoon then brought a string of strong names, including Simone Tang, whose vocals and minimalist sound created a quiet kind of magic, and Downtown July, who impressed with polished, melancholic pop.
Shebaba – A musical tour de force
Shebaba turned out to be the evening’s biggest surprise. With a sound that elegantly blended soul, funk and electronic elements, they cast a spell over the audience with both groove and grit. It all came wrapped in a stage presence that made the concert one of the day’s most danceable and memorable.

Gunge – Pop with brutal honesty
Gunge, aka Ida Gunge, struck a different emotional register. Her Danish lyrics circled around the rootlessness and emotional chaos of youth, and her powerful voice and intense presence created a concert that was both hard-hitting and beautiful. Tracks like Ambulance made it clear that Gunge is one of the strongest new voices on the scene.

Ahead – Explosive jazz-hip-hop with attitude
Ahead turned Drivhuset into a party. With five rappers, live instrumentation and scratches from DJs, they delivered a set that was gloriously chaotic. The audience was with them all the way — the curious and the dancing alike. It was a highlight that summed up everything SPOT is about: energy, courage and something new.

Fine and the dignified finale
Fine closed the day in Store Sal with a performance that was equal parts tender and grand. A fitting ending to a day in which the new and untested showed itself from its very best side.

In reality…
SPOT Festival 2025’s first day once again proved why the festival is one of the country’s most important platforms for new music. With strong names like Shebaba, Gunge and Ahead, and a general willingness to experiment, the day was a success both artistically and in terms of atmosphere.
